Bobby Womack is a soul legend and throughout the 1970’s he was undoubtedly one of the greatest, most successful, revered and prolific male soul singers. In the first half of that decade he cut some great albums for United Artists including the brilliant ‘Communication’, ‘Understanding’ and ‘Facts Of life’, which earned him the nickname of ‘The Preacher’. His deep and rich soulful voice was soul music personified.

He left UA in 1976 and signed with Columbia where he cut these two great albums, which have stood the test of time and are now rated amongst his best work.
‘Home Is Where The Heart Is’ was recorded in Muscle Shoals in 1976 and features their famous Rhythm and Horn sections. The title track and ‘Something For My Head’ both written by Phillip Mitchell have become popular tracks on the UK Modern Soul scene.
It also features the beautiful ballad ‘One More Chance On Love’ and a great cover of Sam Cooke’s ‘A Change Is Gonna Come’.

The follow up from 1978 was recorded primarily in Detroit and also in muscle Shoals and was produced by Don Davis, who called in some big guns to help. ‘Pieces’ contains some of Womack’s best performances. ‘Trust Your Heart’ is a great mid tempo track that features Michael Henderson’s throbbing bass lines, and background vocals courtesy of David Ruffin. ‘Stop Before we Start’ a great ballad featuring Candi Staton on background vocals, ‘Caught up In The Middle’ was co-written by and features Ronnie McNeir on keyboards whilst the gritty ‘Wind Me Up’ and ‘Never Let Nothing Get The Best Of You’ features Fred Wesley and the Horny Horns.

These great albums did not achieve the commercial success they deserved and Womack left Columbia and joined Arista making one album ‘Roads Of life’ which includes the classic ‘How Can You Break My Heart’ recently issued on CD by Expansion.
