LESETTE WILSON - NOW THAT I'VE GOT YOUR ATTENTION
Lesette Wilson came to the attention of many people as the keyboard player and part arranger on Tom Browne's 'Love Approach' album and notably on his hit 'Funkin' For Jamaica (NY)'. Like many of the GRP artists at that time she hailed from Jamaica Queens NYC. As a result of the massive exposure of Tom's record, she was noticed by Headfirst Records and produced this album, which most people thought was her debut, although she had previously recorded three Latin/salsa albums. I remember hearing 'Caveman Boogie' on Robbie Vincent's radio show on Radio London, and spent sometime trying to find the album. That track became a jazz funk classic and it was no surprise that it was revived in the rare groove era in the late 80's/early 90's, or that some of the tracks have been used as samples by artists like Jay-Z, LL Cool J and KRS-One. The album was one of the first digital master recordings that I remember hearing, the clarity of the recording was stunning by 1981 standards. In many ways that helped to illustrate how far ahead of its time the album was. All songs except one were composed, written, arranged and produced by Lesette, who played a wide range of keyboards and sang both lead and background vocals So now she really did have our attention, then after playing on Roy Ayers 'Africa Centre of the World' album, Lesette decided to concentrate on writing and producing. She worked with Melissa Morgan on her 'Do Me Baby' (featuring the hit Fools Paradise) and 'Good Love' albums, on which she played most of the instruments and Genobia Jeter on her track 'All of my love'. In 1987 Lesette released a twelve inch single 'Look Into Tomorrow' which has proved to be very elusive, and now changes hands for considerable amounts of money, thanks to Norman Jay playing it regularly on his radio show. That track is featured here as CD bonus track. Her second solo album 'Unmasked' recorded for Atlantic in 1993 featured Toni Smith (the singer on Funkin for Jamaica), Saundra Williams, Gerry Devaux and Angie Stone. This album encompassed Jazz, R&B and hip-hop, and showed off her many skills as a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer. Throughout the past twenty years Lesette has performed regularly and has been the musical director and keyboard player for tours by Loose Ends, Najee, Billy Ocean, Stanley Turrentine, Bobbi Humphrey, Noel Pointer, Ray Gomez, Glen Jones, Amel Larrieux, Meli'sa Morgan and Chaka Khan. She is currently working on club remixes for artists including Cher and Groove Theory. Lesette has recently released her third album 'Livin' in the Zone' another great album that will be appreciated by her many fans, and hopefully open up new horizons to her. We are very proud to be associated with an artist of Lesette's calibre and to present this epic jazz funk album on CD for the first time.
