GIL SCOTT HERON/BRIAN JACKSON – FROM SOUTH AFRICA TO SOUTH CAROLINA
Gil Scott Heron is justifiably recognised as one of the most unique black music artists of all time. His music transgresses all musical barriers in the same way that Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley and Marvin Gaye did.

From South Africa to South Carolina, their second album for Arista was recorded in the summer of 1975. It includes the single ‘Johannesburg’ which brought to our attention the resistance to the apartheid regime in South Africa. On 16th June 1976 student protests in Soweto were met by police teargas and gunfire. The resulting riots drew media attention and informed the rest of the world of what was happening.

Gil and Brian consistently informed us of injustices and situations through their music during the decade.
The consequences of nuclear power stations was also a recurring theme, ‘South Carolina (Barnwell)’, was their first track on this subject.

This album consolidated Gil Scott Heron and Bran Jackson as major label artists and gave them an R&B chart single and a wider audience with Johannesburg.

We are proud to release ‘From South Africa To South Carolina’ on CD in our classic albums series. The music has been re-mastered from the Original master tapes and sounds incredibly fresh.
