SIDE EFFECT -
EFFECTIVE
The birth of Side Effect
began in the year of 1972 in Los Angeles with the members as they appear on
this album. It took a few months before the group signed their first record
deal with a company called Avenue of America : Gas Records, with whom they
recorded this first album, 'Effective' in 1973. Regrettably, the results were
not so effective as it was never commercially issued at the time. Although this
relationship was terminated a year later, Side Effect continued to evolve. They
changed female lead vocalist from Lomita to Sylvia Nabors, and joined At-Home
Productions, a production company headed by Wayne Henderson of the Jazz
Crusaders. One month later, they signed with Fantasy Records and recorded four
albums. These were 'Side Effect', 'What You Need' (which had hit singles,
'Always There' and 'Keep That Same Old Feeling'), 'Going Bananas', and 'Rainbow
Vision'. Sylvia Nabors did an excellent job on the first album, but by the time
'What You Need' was recorded, Helen Lowe was the new female vocalist (later to
become gospel sensation Helen Baylor of 'Oasis' notoriety). After these four
albums were completed, Side Effect parted company with Fantasy Records and were
picked up by Elektra, along with new female vocalist, Miki Howard. They
recorded three albums 'After The Rain', 'Portraits' and 'All Aboard' but upon
completion of the final album, Side Effect parted ways. In 1990 group members
of Side Effect formed an all male group named Flawless, under the direction and
management of Mick Fleetwood and Dennis Duston. This Group included Reggie
Ellis, Willie Green, Augie Johnson, Greg Matta and Louis Patton. In Early 1995,
Side Effect re-united and immediately was picked up by Dog House Records. The
newly revived group added Lewis Shaw Jr. after the departure of Willie Green
and Reggie Ellis. A new version of the single 'Keep That Same Old Feeling' and
a current CD album 'N'Effect' is currently on the market. Alongside all of this
Side Effect has worked with numerous artists and organizations such as: Michael
Jackson, Bette Middler, Barbara Streisand, Johnny Mathis, the Temptations,
Gloria Trevi, Richard Simmons, The Brothers Johnson, movie and television
soundtracks such as Glory, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Sparkle, Power
of One, Gabriel's fire, and commercials such as Cheerios and California Cooler.
After making 'Effective', Jim Gilstrap went on to become a prolific writer and
session singer also re-recording 'Run, Run, Run' from this album as a solo
single for Bell Records.
